20160206 Demolition of Sixth Street Bridge begins in downtown LA

A 40-hour closure of a 2 1/2-mile stretch of the Hollywood (101) Freeway in the Boyle Heights area to accommodate demolition of the Sixth Street Viaduct was underway Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016 in Los Angeles. The landmark bridge, dating to the 1930's, is being replaced due to deterioration caused by a chemical reaction in the concrete. The $449 million project to build a replacement bridge, designed by architect Michael Maltzan, is expected to be completed by 2019 at the earliest. (Photo by Ringo Chiu/PHOTOFORMULA.com)
